THE SPEAKER

Simone Cavanaugh is the founder and Director of Pivot International, a non-profit organization that provides adapted equipment and sustainable access to medical services for children with special needs in developing countries, starting with Nicaragua.

Diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis at the age of six, Simone was in a wheelchair for seven years and has since spent her life working with and advocating for children with special needs around the world. She has been the Arthritis Society’s Childhood Arthritis Spokesperson for over ten years and worked with organizations such as Viomax, MAB-Mackay School and Handicap International. She has also worked for the Government of Ontario and recently completed a human rights internship with the Center for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland in Galway. In addition to running her organization and full-time studies, Simone is a motivational speaker, Equity Commissioner for McGill University and Coordinator of Women in House, an organization that promotes female participation in Canadian politics.

Simone is a McGill University law student in her final year, completing a Major in International Human Rights and Development. She is the recipient of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 Award, Forces Avenir’s Étudiante engagée par excellence prize and was named a Loran Scholar, recipient of the largest undergraduate scholarship in Canada.
Simone Cavanaugh est la fondatrice et directrice de Pivot International, un organisme sans but lucratif qui fournit de l’équipement adapté et un accès durable aux services médicaux pour les enfants ayant des besoins particuliers dans les pays en voie de développement, en commençant avec le Nicaragua.

Après un diagnostique d’arthrite juvénile idiopathique à l’âge de six ans, Simone a vécu en chaise roulante pendant sept ans. Elle a depuis passé sa vie à travailler et défendre les droits des enfants ayant des besoins particuliers à travers le monde. Elle est porte-parole de l’arthrite juvénile pour la Société de l’arthrite depuis plus de dix ans et a travaillé avec plusieurs organismes incluant Viomax, l’école MAB-Mackay et Handicap International. Elle a aussi travaillé pour le gouvernement de l’Ontario et a tout récemment complété un stage de droits de la personne avec The Center for Disability Law and Policy à l’Université Nationale de l’Irlande à Galway. Outre la direction de son organisme et ses études à temps-plein, Simone est une conférencière motivatrice, Commissaire de l’équité pour l’Université McGill et coordonnatrice de Women in House, un organisme qui vise à promouvoir la participation politique des femmes au Canada.

Simone complète sa dernière année en droit à l’Université McGill avec une spécialisation en développement et droits de la personne internationale. Elle est récipiendaire du diplôme canadien 20 ados avec brio, du prix Étudiante engagée par excellence de Forces Avenir et a été sélectionnée boursière Loran, la plus grande bourse d’études de premier cycle au Canada.
