THE TALK

THE SPEAKER

Nivatha Balendra is a 19-year old young scientist in her first year of Physiology at McGill University. She started developing her passion for research since high school through participating in numerous scientific competitions at the regional, national, and international levels. Her recent environmental science research work focuses on novel species of Pseudomonas genus bacteria and their future application in oil contamination cleanups. This project has won her numerous research awards, including the chance to participate at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair last summer. From this competition, she was awarded with the inaugural World Economic Forum Future Scientists Award which enabled her to attend this conference in Tianjin, China. Nivatha is currently continuing her project at l’Institut national de la recherche scientifique- Institut Armand-Frappier in the hopes of developing it into a product for industrial use.

Nivatha has also recently founded the International Young Scientists Mentorship Program, a non-profit organization, in order to encourage more youth to participate in STEM activities and provide opportunities for their scientific enrichment.

Apart from environmental sciences, Nivatha envisions herself applying health sciences research in the field of global health and comparative healthcare.
